In 1989, Cherokee Park United Church began a free, volunteer-based, after school tutoring program for children attending public elementary schools on St. Paul’s West Side. Building Blocks Tutorial developed a strong reputation for excellence in the community and beyond. It served more than six hundred students over a long history. The congregation of Cherokee Park United supported the program with their time, energy, resources, and prayers. They also secured the funding to operate the program for twenty-seven years.
Today, Cherokee Park United continues its support of public education as a community partner to the West Siders for Strong Schools organization. Participating in school open houses and promoting school meetings and volunteering, Cherokee Park United lives out our wider church’s historic advocacy for this right for all children in our community and nation.
